Maybe someone could explain this in simple terms to me, because I don’t get why everyone is panicking about the coronavirus? I’ve watched the news, read some articles but I’m not getting why there is a panic.

Sure, for people like me with problems anything like this is a scary. Hell, even the flu is scary for me; I was hospitalized last year for that.

But why the mass panic? I don’t get it. And the mass panic is freaking me out.

Pretty much everyone in the US knows several immunocompromised people. And there is a higher death rate than the flu. It’s not that people think they’re going to die, but it’s that they think people around them will.

Educated people are more concerned about it becoming a seasonal issue that kills a lot of people every year.

Some people are panicking because the measures to prevent it from becoming a seasonal recurring illness like the flu are disrupting their lives a lot. Like their colleges closing, not being able to visit their relatives in the hospital, Etc.

If I were you I would try to avoid watching the news since you probably know everything there is to know about it already. Because a lot of it is going to be people focusing on the coronavirus because it’s important news to share and they get views for it. Especially if you have family who can just tell you what’s going on in your area you’re honestly probably better off. I have a friend with an anxiety disorder I’m doing that for so she doesn’t have to be exposed to the news cycle about it.

CDC is a decent (& definitely not fearmongering) source of info. The seasonal flu is more dangerous than COVID 19 but the latter is more contagious. & with the state of healthcare in the US, people are worried they can’t get treatment or even tested because they can’t afford it.

Thank you both!
